Thank you for your interest in Darmasiswa Scholarship Programs funded by the Government of Republic Indonesia through the Ministry of National Education (MoNE). To facilitate your application, please review the information in this package carefully.

General Information

Darmasiswa Scholarship Programs is an initiative to build partnerships and increase mutual understanding through study and international education experience. The program was launched in 1974, initially only for ASEAN countries. Due to immediate success, the program was offered to young generation of all friends of Indonesia around the world.

For academic year 2008 – 2009, Darmasiswa Scholarship Programs will grant 750 scholarships –including American youths - whishing to undertake study - non-degree programs - in one of the following fields: Indonesian language (Bahasa Indonesia), dance, music, arts and crafts in selected Indonesia universities/colleges teacher training centers. For those who intend to study and enroll a degree program at Indonesian universities, the Government of Indonesia also offers a six months Indonesian language bridging course.

The scholarship recipients will have opportunity to broaden their experience by living in a cross-cultural environment. They will be eligible for free tuition and other instructional fees, modest living allowance to cover accommodation and other living expenses. However, they will not receive be allowed to take employment opportunities, undertake side-research, or involve in political activities.

The Programs

For the academic year 2008 – 2009, the Ministry of National Education is offering two categories of Darmasiswa Scholarship Programs:

  1. Darmasiswa Regular Program
    1. A one year non-degree program to undertake study in one of the following fields: Bahasa Indonesia, traditional dances, music, arts and crafts.
    2. A one year non degree program to undertake six months Bahasa Indonesia class then followed by undertaking another field of study for another six months.
  2. Darmasiswa RI Program - Plus Studying Other Course
    A one year program to study Indonesian language, arts or culture in participating Indonesian universities and other four-credit courses, recognized by their home country university to pursue the double-degree program.
  3. Darmasiswa RI-Plus Program
    A one year program to study Indonesian language, arts or culture in participating Indonesian universities, and teach foreign language part time basis for 10 hours/week at nearby schools
  4. Darmasiswa Short Course Program
    A six- month bridging course to learn Indonesian language for those who would like to undertake undergraduate or graduate degree program at Indonesian universities.
  5. Darmasiswa RI Program - Double Degree
    A one or one and a half- year program to study Indonesian language, arts or culture in participating Indonesian universities within the framework of pursuing the double degree program. 

Eligibility

Interested applicants must:

  • be American Citizen
  • be under 35 years of age
  • have completed Secondary Education or its equivalent
  • have a basic knowledge of the proposed field of study
  • be in good health as proved by Medical Examination Record
  • be able to communicate in English

For those who apply for the Darmasiswa Short Course Program, applicants should be able to show admission letter or other relevant documents from the intended universities in Indonesia.

Requirements

Prior to traveling to Indonesia, scholarship recipients must:

  • Receive a letter of acceptance from the Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia
  • Meet Indonesian immigration requirements for temporary resident visa
  • Not be pregnant when traveling to Indonesia to begin study

In Indonesia, the scholarship recipients must:

  • Abide the condition of the scholarship and the rules of Indonesian university/college/teacher training center
  • Abide the rules and regulation governing a temporary resident visa
  • Act in a way that will not bring dispute to Indonesian government or institutions, and
  • Return home at the end of the award period
Health Insurance and Flight Ticket

The Ministry does not provide health insurance or health coverage, and does not provide flight tickets to and from Indonesia. Students must pay their own health insurance and flight tickets.

Application Checklists

  • One original and two copies of completed and signed Application Form provided by Ministry of National Education through the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate General Offices;
  • Three pieces of the applicant’s recent photographs (size 4X6 cm);
  • Three copies of Medical Examination Records;
  • Three copies of official transcript from senior high school, college or university attended;
  • Three copies of passport with a validity for a least two years;
  • Applicants applying for the Darmasiswa Short Course Program A should include admission letter or other relevant documents from the Indonesian universities where you will undertake undergraduate or graduate programs;
  • Recommendation letters from Indonesian Missions in USA
