Jakarta - The Composite Stock Price Index (IHSG) at the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) got off to a strong start and approached the level of 2,600 points here on Wednesday morning.

The BEI index surged 4.884 points or 0.19 percent to 2,582.190 points and the LQ-45 index climbed 1.532 point or 0.31 percent to 503.308 point.

The Indonesian stocks gained as investors grabbed blue chip shares, despite the uncertain domestic political situation following a chaotic plenary session of the parliament on Tuesday (Mar 2).

The BEI index had a chance to reach the level of 2,600 points again, according to Krisna Dwi Setiawan, a foreign exchange analyst of PT Valbury Asia Securities.

The domestic political situation did not affect the stock market as investors looked at the improved regional markets bolstered by Wall Street gains, he said.

Among top gainers at the BEI were state telecommunication company PT Telkom shares that climbed Rp50 to Rp8,400, Gudang Garam shares that rose Rp50 to Rp27,400, BTPN shares that added Rp50 to Rp6,700, and BCA shares that advanced Rp25 to Rp4,875 as well as P Gas shares that surged Rp25 to Rp3,775.

Meanwhile, the rupiah traded Rp9,270-Rp9,280 per US dollar, down 20 points from Rp9,250-Rp9,260 per US dollar at the market`s close a day earlier.
