RI Foreign Minister: Indonesia will always play an active role in the UN

Indonesia is always ready to play an active role in the United Nations. This was stated by RI Foreign Minister, Retno Marsudi at her first bilateral meeting with UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers Meeting in Bonn, Germany.

The Minister conveyed her hope that the UN Secretary General can support the resolution of various conflicts including in the Middle East. In particular, the Minister raised three issues during the meeting, namely the problems faced by the Indonesian members of the FPU (Force Police Unit) stationed in Darfur; developments in Rakhine State, and the Palestinian issue.

In discussing the developments in Rakhine State, the UN Secretary General expressed his appreciation for the RI FM and Indonesia on the active diplomacy and constructive approach so far taken related to the Rakhine State issue. Both the Minister and Secretary General agreed on the complexity of the issue. This is why it is important for the UN and Indonesia to continue constructive engagement by giving special attention to various human rights violations but also to provide support and help as well as cooperate with Myanmar’s government to resolve the issue. “Indonesia is ready to facilitate communications between the international community including the UN with the Myanmar Government,” said the Minister.
