One main issue that became a common wish for all IORA Leaders is to establish the Indian Ocean as a safe, peaceful and prosperous region. Leaders also have a high commitment to respect international laws, including UNCLOS 1982. A peaceful and safe Indian Ocean is the main prerequisite to implement cooperation in other fields.
The IORA leaders show a high commitment, said President Jokowi during a press conference after the closing session of the Leader’s Summit at the Jakarta Convention Center this afternoon (7/3).
Another point that was welcomed by the leaders is the convening of the IORA Business Summit. “Networking and cooperation between businessmen must be further strengthened in the future,” he added.
The IORA Summit is also a milestone of renewal of commitment for the member countries to intensify IORA cooperation.
“All leaders realize the challenges we are facing today. All leaders realize the potentials that we have. All leaders also realize the importance of safeguarding the Indian Ocean, an Ocean that unites all member countries,” President Jokowi emphasized.
The Jakarta Concord which has been signed earlier today strengthen the commitment on six priorities – to promote maritime safety and security; to increase trade and investment cooperation; to advance the sustainable and responsible development and management of fisheries; to strengthen disaster risk management; to elevate academic and science cooperation; and to promote cooperation in tourism and culture.
