As long as nuclear weapons exist the potential for catastrophe caused by its use still remains. That is why the total disarmament of nuclear weapons must be the main goal.
This statement was made by RI Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi in her opening remarks at the Regional Dialogue and Consultation on the Treaty on Non Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in Jakarta on Monday (13/3). The two-day meeting with the theme ‘Towards Preparatory Committee Meeting 2017′ was attended by representatives of 35 NPT state parties in the Asia Pacific region.
The Minister also focused on the current disparity of NPT pillar implementation. The modernisation of nuclear power and the right to nuclear energy for peaceful uses are still discriminative.
Currently, NPT is the only multilateral treaty on nuclear weapons disarmament and non-proliferation, as well as nuclear energy for peaceful use, otherwise known as the three pillars of the NPT Treaty. Read more…
