Yudhoyono Calls for Improvement in Law Enforcement Efforts

Jakarta - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has called for improvement in law enforcement efforts to fulfill the community`s sense of justice and security.
"All legal cases must be dealt with thoroughly so that we could move to make more effective law enforcement efforts," he said at a limited cabinet meeting on political, security and legal affairs here on Tuesday.
He said he followed public debate and also listened to public criticism about law enforcement in the country. "What I meant by law enforcement is what the police, the attorney general`s office and other offices concerned have so far done. And so if any shortcoming all parties in the justice sector should be responsible with regard to improving it," he said.
In view of the public debate President Yudhoyono called on all law enforcers to be more focussed in seeking the settlement of legal cases without exception.
" I would like to ask all parties, the ranks of the government, the police and the attorney general`s office to settle all legal cases professionally, fairly and with full respect to justice. Do not let any impression to emerge that a case is being freezed or singled out," he said.
With regard to a number of crimes that have drawn public attention President Yudhoyono said that the public must be given as much information as possible about the handling of the cases.
"I called for a thorough settlement of cases that have drawn public scrutiny such as corruption. Every step taken in that regard must be communicated to the public fully and clearly," he said.
He said the more the public knew about efforts that have been taken the better they would understand the core of the problem.
President Yudhoyono also mentioned some remarkable crimes that had drawn public attention such as violent crimes, circulation of bogus money, problem accounts, narcotic crimes, terroris, corruption, riotings and tax corruption.
"The law must be enforced against all of them with full responsibility and concrete results," he said.
Regarding corruption in the regions he said he continued receiving requests from the police and the attorney general`s office for a permit to investigate regional officials.
On the other hand he said he also received reports about the violations done by some law enforcers in the region.
"I am very concerned about illegal levies in the regions which must be overcome well. In the past five years the welfare of civil servants, the police and other law enforcers have been raised to make them avoid corruption," he said.
President Yudhoyono said law enforcement efforts must be improved to meet the people`s sense of justice and security.
