Indonesia is among the world's top 10 remittance receiving countries in 2010, with the value of remittance sent to the country last year totaling US$7 billion, a global money transfer company executive says.
The large number of Indonesian workers overseas has been the main contributor to the high remittance rate, Nick Cunnew, senior regional director for Asia Pacific at US-based MoneyGram International, said Wednesday in Jakarta citing a World Bank report.
He said the most remittance came from Malaysia, given the large number of Indonesian migrant workers there, including illegal ones.
The next most common destinations for Indonesian migrant workers were Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia and Singapore.
Cunnew said he projected a continuous increase in the number of remittance sent to Indonesia in the future, along with a continued increase of Indonesian laborers seeking jobs overseas.
The same World Bank report said the US and Saudi Arabia, respectively, were the top two senders of remittance globally last year, kompas.com reported.
